Most of us have been conditioned by the world’s system. We go to school, earn good grades, and attend a college or university with hopes of landing a decent job when we graduate. While God instructs His children to be 10 times wiser than the world’s (Daniel 1:17), He did not instruct us to succumb to the world’s system. God will often instruct us to start our own businesses to circumvent the world’s system. Proverbs 8:12 says, “I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.” Oftentimes, when we pray to God to meet our needs, He will give us a God idea to start a business. He may ask us to use the gifts He’s put in our hands (Proverbs 18:16), or He may ask us to use resources we have in our houses like the widow woman with the cruise of oil (II Kings 4:1-7).
Like the woman with the cruise of oil, we probably don’t want to hear about an idea when we have an urgent financial need. However, God desires that we have sustainable wealth—not merely live from paycheck to paycheck or miracle to miracle. Her oil making business sustained the widow and her sons, paid off all her debts, and provided her with a sustainable source of income. Since God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34), He is able to perform the same miracle in our lives today!
God gives all of us gifts. Our gift back to Him is how we bless mankind with the gifts that He has given us (Proverbs 19:21; Proverbs 16:9). God has multiple ways to bless His people and everyone’s path to success is unique to his or her own path. God will not bless us with the next step until we follow the instructions He’s already given us. Proverbs 3:5-6 says that He will direct our paths when we follow Him. God promises to lead us in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake — His path of right living and His way of doing things (Psalms 23:3). Let us follow God’s individual will for each of our lives which will lead us to the blessing of the Lord (Proverbs 10:22).
While God promises to bless His children, He is not a genie in a bottle. As His children, we have a covenant with God. Hebrews 8:6 says, “But now hath [Jesus] obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.” He only promises to bless us when we follow Him. Let us build His Kingdom!
